Marion Bledsoe Beal was born in Scottsville, Albemarle County, Virginia. His family later lived in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was the son of John Bledsoe Beal and Nellie Vivian Dick. He entered the US Army Air Corps on March 31, 1942
On March 6, 1944 he was on the crew of the B-17F #42-29943 "Situation Normal" during a mission to Berlin. They were shot down by enemy fighters and crashed near Oldenburg, Germany. Five men were killed, and five bailed out and were captured, held as POWs.
It was reported that he managed to parachute out of the plane, but was so seriously wounded he died soon after.
