On February 15, 1943 he was on the crew of the B-24D Liberator #41-23800 "The Captain and the Kids" during a mission to bomb the port area of Dunkirk, France. Their aircraft was badly crippled by enemy anti-aircraft fire, and the bailout order was given. Near the Kent coast the pilot made a crash-landing on the beach of Sandwich Flats. Three men were dead before they could leave the aircraft, or were killed on the ground.
