Additional Details
George Allison Whiteman was born and raised in Pettis County, Missouri. He was the oldest of the ten children of John Casey Whiteman and Earlie Sanders. He graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in Sedalia and attended the Rolla School of Mines before enlisting in the service in 1939.

On the morning of December 7, 1941, Lieutenant Whiteman could not get an aircraft at Wheeler Field so he drove to Bellows Field where got into a P-40 and had just lifted off the runway when a Japanese aircraft shot him down. He died in the crash just off the end of the runway. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action on that day.

In 1955, fourteen years after his death, Sedalia Air Force Base was renamed Whiteman Air Force Base in his honor.

His younger brother, PFC Marshall Earl Whiteman went on to serve in the US Marines. He was killed in action in Korea on April 9, 1953.
