Additional Details
Gordon Eshom Shive was born and raised in Laguna Beach, California. He was the oldest of the two sons, the only children, of Grover Lee Shive and Lois Eliza Eshom. His father died in 1935 from a brain tumor, leaving the two boys and their mother to struggle during the midst of the Great Depression. They both graduated from Laguna Beach High School and enlisted in the service.

Gordon Eshom Shive was attending Fullerton Junior College when he dropped out to enlist in the US Marine Corps on April 13, 1940. He needed to help his family financially, and the service could help.

He was a member of the US Marine Whaleboat racing crew, serving aboard the USS Arizona. Of just over a dozen men on their team, only two would survive the attack at Pearl Harbor.

His younger brother Radioman 3rd Class Malcolm Holman Shive served in the US Navy, also aboard the USS Arizona. He was reported missing in action during the attack at Pearl Harbor.

impact
It's required 8+ years, 1000s of skilled labor hours, scores of active contributors, and millions of visitors to realize the value in the National Unified Archive of American Gold Star Veterans. We have not satisfied everyone. That's impossible, considering the unique + personal needs of individuals. However, our annual positivity ratings exceed 95%. It's tough to get that many people to agree on anything. So, we do seem to be on the right track.
honor
None of us would be who we are, or have what we have, if not for the strengths and sacrifices of others. Most of us enjoy lives of relative freedom. Our freedom has come at enormous cost. The price paid by those who gave their all. In service to their country, states and communities. Each of them a beloved member of our global family.
