On February 29, 1944 he was on the crew of the Douglas A-20 Havoc #41-3344 when he was seriously wounded by flak during a mission over the Mediterranean area. Two other men on the aircraft were wounded, however Lieutenant McLennan was the only one who died from the injuries.
