Additional Details
On October 8, 1963 he was on the crew of the Sikorsky Seahorse UH-34D helicopter #BU-148781 from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 361 along with UH-34D (BU-148759) during a search and rescue mission for a downed friendly aircraft. While over Quang Nam Province, both helicopters crashed in mountainous jungle terrain, in what was then hostile territory.
There is some evidence to suggest they may have been involved in a mid-air collision. There were a dozen Marine and Navy personnel killed, the greatest loss of American lives from a single incident up to that time in the war. Many of the men's remains were deemed unrecoverable until after the war.
His remains were recovered on December 1, 2003 and identified on November 14, 2006. He has been laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
We identified 6 casualties in our archive related to the #BU-148781 incident on October 8, 1963.
