Additional Details
Sherman Windham White Jr was born in Macon, Noxubee County, Mississippi and later lived in Montgomery, Alabama. He was a student at the University of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois in 1941 when he learned the US Army would begin training black men as aviators. White graduated from flight training on May 20, 1942, at Tuskegee Army Air Field.
On July 2, 1943 he was piloting his P-40L Warhawk #42-10941 escorting B-25s on a mission to Sicily. Unfortunately he and fellow pilot James Lawrence McCullin Jr failed to return to base. It was supposed they were shot down by enemy fighters over Sicily but no crash sites were found. They were the first Tuskegee Airmen killed in action. He was officially declared dead July 4, 1944. His remains were not recovered. |
