Additional Details
2nd Lt Austin E Fryer received his wings at Pecos Army Air Field in May, 1943. He went overseas in October, 1944. Before entering the Air Corps in January, 1943, the 22-year old aviator graduated form Cathedral High School in El Paso and was a pre-law student at the College of Mines (now University of Texas at El Paso).Over Hamburg their aircraft received a direct flak hit and left formation, jettisoning bombs, Number 1 & 2 props were feathered and #2 engine was on fire. Fire was also observed coming from open bomb bay doors. They were last seen in a left hand spiral at 10,000 feet. At least two men bailed out but no chutes were seen. |
