Additional Details
On August 1, 1943 he was on the crew of the B-24D Liberator #41-11886 "Lil Joe" during a low level mission to destroy Rumanian Oil Fields at Ploesti. Over the Mediterranean they developed a fuel connection leak in the bomb bay with substantial loss of fuel while on way to target area. Over the target a fire started in the bomb bay. The signal was given for the crew to bail out. An explosion in the aircraft brought it down in a field beyond the target area.
Five of the men were killed in the air or the crash while four survived and were captured, held as POWs.
His remains were not identified following the war until June 2022. He has been laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
